Jayce's Story: A Community of WishMakers Ignite Hope for Brighter Days Ahead

"I wish to be a firefighter"

Before Jayce was even born, doctors were concerned about his bladder. Jayce was delivered prematurely and rushed to the NICU to stabilize his breathing. Unable to hold their baby and using a Q-tip to feed Jayce drops of milk while intubated, Jayce’s parents felt helpless.

Further testing confirmed severe kidney damage and end-stage renal disease. “Learning about his diagnosis was very scary,” said Jayce’s dad, Dominic. “How will he be? Will he survive?” Dialysis would be inevitable and required strict schedules to maintain Jayce’s treatment and fluid levels. Finally, after two years of waiting, Jayce’s family received the call that his new kidney was ready for transplant. “Nothing can stop him, not even having a brand-new kidney,” said Jayce’s mom, Brittnei.

Jayce's Wish is a Chance to Reclaim His Childhood

Finally freed from an IV pole, Jayce was ready to race toward the future and experience life beyond illness. Naturally, he was fascinated and excited by firetrucks. “Every time he would hear or see one go by, he would be like, ‘Hey, Daddy, fire truck,’” Dominic said. After members of his care team referred Jayce to Make-A-Wish, it became clear: Jayce's heartfelt wish was to be a firefighter.

Thanks to a group of caring WishMakers in his community, including donors, medical partners, volunteers, Make-A-Wish gala organizers and attendees, and, of course, Jayce's local fire department, his wish came true. Firefighters rolled out their flashiest red truck as Jayce suited up for duty and joined them for an official ride. He braved a smoke room, hosed down a real fire and even joined the crew for a chicken nugget lunch.

Everything was about Jayce and that made me so happy,” Brittnei said. “Since having his wish, it's definitely lifted his spirits a lot more.

BRITTNEI, JAYCE'S MOM

Today, Jayce only receives maintenance medication and check-ups. “With everything he’s had to go through … he still finds the joy in everything," Brittnei said. Dominic added, “Where he's at now would not be possible without God, the doctors and Make-A-Wish. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
