Dr. Vivian was first introduced to Make-A-Wish during her fellowship training 15 years ago. Now, as a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, she sees the impact a wish has on the children she treats.

“Having those wish experiences where they can just be a kid for the day really does a lot to boost their morale and to give them something to look forward to, and also memories for them to look back on when their treatments are really tough,” Dr. Vivian said.

As both a pediatric physician and a mother of two, Dr. Vivian understands that a wish doesn’t just benefit the child – it lifts up the entire family. “It’s really hard on the siblings, as well as the parents, to take care of themselves … because everyone is focused on getting the sick child better. So having this Make-A-Wish experience involving the whole family is really such a special moment.”

One of her favorite things about wish granting is seeing her patients light up with excitement and anticipation for their wish, allowing her to see their true personalities shine through.

When a kid comes back from their wish, I love when they … want to show me every picture of their experience. The way that their faces light up, it makes everyone in the room smile, and it makes us forget for a second that we’re actually in a doctor’s office.

As a WishMaker, Dr. Vivian inspires her colleagues to identify and refer more eligible children, because she knows how transformative the wish experience can be. “The difference in the child’s medical treatment [after a wish] can’t be understated enough. Make-A-Wish works with the patient and their families to make something really unique. It’s not a one-size-fits-all. [The wish] makes for a really powerful memory that they will carry with them beyond their illness.”

A wish unites entire communities of medical providers, volunteers, donors, fundraisers, past wish families and other supporters who all share one common goal: to improve the lives of children with critical illnesses. Anyone can offer their passion, talents and resources to make wishes possible – and it can be life-changing for everyone involved. Become a WishMaker today.
